Pumpkin Math

We had so much fun in pumpkin math today!  Everyone was so excited to do pumpkin math.  In some groups they had 500 seeds in the pumpkin and in one group they had about 200.  In my group we had about 500.  Tomorrow we will roast the seeds and eat them.

T-Shirt Temperature

Today we talked about the temperature of colors and how Monarchs stay warm for migration.  Most of us chose black out of black, yellow and white t-shirts.  We thought black would be the warmest.

Our Monarch Butterfly

At last, we have a butterfly.  He emerged while the students were in P.E. It was so exciting. We have decided that it would be cruel to release him at this time, so we'll just have to see how he does as a class pet.  We'll enjoy him while we can.

Changes in the Chrysalis

I stopped into my room this morning because Fozzy's been in Chrysalis for 14 days now.  Low and behold, there have been some big changes.  Within 24 hours he/she should emerge.  I've observed some definite movement occurring. Look at the picture carefully.  You can see the wing's pattern inside. Perhaps by tomorrow we'll have a butterfly in our classroom.

Fozzy the Lone Monarch

We have been nervously waiting to see if Fozzy, our last Monarch, will emerge from it's chrysalis.  We made predictions about Fozzy's emergence date, graphed our results as a class, and have been watching for changes daily.  I promised the students I would post any changes during MEA break.  This is what Fozzy looked like today.  We're keeping our fingers crossed.  Good luck Fozzy...we're rooting for you!

Halloween Monsters

Today we had fun. We made Halloween Monsters, made of paper scraps. We got to name them.
